IOM supports the Government of Mozambique in providing WASH services in areas affected by natural hazards and insecurity, aiming to ensure sustainable and reliable access to safe water and sanitation, whilst promoting hygiene practices, and enhance the resilience of IDPs and host communities. These interventions include strategic plans of decentralized water supply and sustainable water networks, wastewater treatment systems (including latrines and decentralized systems), and fecal sludge management. Hygiene promotion activities are carried out to promote behavioral change, including hygiene sessions, establishment of hygiene committees in displacement sites, and distribution of hygiene kits, including those for menstrual hygiene management. The program also integrates Gender-Based Violence (GBV) mitigation across all activities. Assessments, participatory designs, infrastructure construction, monitoring, and community participation contribute to delivering inclusive and durable WASH interventions. The WASH Programme works alongside other services such as CCCM, shelter and housing, mental health and psychosocial support, protection and health, among others, to meet the immediate and long-term needs of displaced persons in Mozambique.
Objective
Ensure sustainable access to safe water and sanitation, promote good hygiene practices, and enhance the resilience of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host communities.
