Thousands of families in Mozambique were displaced by Cyclone Idai in March 2019. Hundreds of people in Buzi were rescued either by helicopter or by boat. The Government of Mozambique has supported the voluntary return of families back to their area of origin.

In February 2018, IOM, the UN Migration Agency assisted 53 Ethiopian migrants who had been stranded in Mozambique to return home through the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration. The migrants suffered dehydration and minor injuries as they trekked for four months along the Southern migration route. They recount their story.
