As the sun dipped below the horizon, Anli Arcanjo sat down to break his Ramadan fast with his family. Suddenly, the tranquility was shattered by the arrival of armed groups. Anli's quick thinking led him and his three children to seek refuge in the 'machambas', plots of cultivated land. Sadly, his wife was taken away by the armed forces. For three days, Anly and the children hid in the cultivated land until they could escape to Metuge, where the government provided them with a piece of land to resettle.
It was there that eventually Anli was reunited with his wife. Among the thousands displaced by the conflict in Northern Mozambique, Anli yearns for his former home and land, yet he cherishes the newfound security.
"I'm afraid to go back. What if they take my wife again?"
Since his arrival, he's been diligently planting fruit trees and vegetables. Although he explains that the soil there is less fertile, his determination is unwavering.
"This lemon tree I've planted symbolizes my commitment to this land, my new home."
Anli's plot is now thriving with papaya trees, corn, sesame, and more, a testament to his resilience and hope for the future.
