SENAMI receives donation of equipment to improve migration management in northern Mozambique
26.01.23 Maputo - SENAMI, the Mozambican Migration Service, has recently received a donation of equipment to help improve the management of migration at the border between Cabo Delgado Province in northern Mozambique and Tanzania. The donation, which includes IT (Information Technology) equipment, will help SENAMI to better facilitate safe and orderly cross-border movements.
The donation is part of a broader program by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) to support the Government of Mozambique to improve its operational systems, human resources and administrative and technical structures required to effectively manage some the cross-border dynamics of the conflict in Northern Mozambique, with the overall aim of strengthening peace and security. This will also allow the Government to respond more effectively to diverse migration and border management challenges, while ensuring the protection of vulnerable migrants.
“It is with great honor that I participate in this ceremony, which marks the delivery of this equipment to SENAMI. This donation aims to strengthen SENAMI's technical capacity in migration management with a focus on the border posts of Cabo Delgado and at SENAMI's headquarters in Maputo. Training, improvement of equipment and infrastructure, will allow SENAMI technicians to manage migration while ensuring border security.” said Dr. Laura Tomm-Bonde – IOM Chief of Mission in Mozambique.
The General Director of SENAMI – Fulgêncio Seda said, “in the context of institutional development, SENAMI recognizes IOM's support in increasing technical capacity through training to improve service delivery with emphasis on the integrated border management programme. We also recognize IOM's support with preparing the concept for Mozambique's migration policy and the national reference mechanism for supporting vulnerable migrants.” Furthermore, “what has been highlighted above consolidates IOM's commitment to supporting SENAMI, which in this act exceeds our expectations.”
“With the aim of improving Community security and enhancing border security, thereby contributing to peace and stability between the borders of Mozambique and Tanzania, Germany finances this IOM project with EUR 4.2 million. I am therefore pleased that through this project implemented by the IOM, Germany can help strengthen the building of trust between the Authorities of Mozambique, communities, and local authorities, thus making an important contribution to the prevention of violent extremism.” stated Mr. Ingmar Kreisl – Deputy Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy.
The donation is part of a larger initiative aimed at improving migration management in the region and addressing the root causes of conflict and displacement.
