The Municipal Council of the City of Pemba hosts the Seminar for the presentation and discussion of territorial approaches to support the sustainable integration of displaced families and host communities in the City of Pemba in the framework of the initiative "Sustainable and Gender Sensitive Integration of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Pemba through the implementation of Durable Solutions"

Pemba, 09 December 2022 - The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in coordination with the Municipal Council of the City of Pemba, is implementing the project "Sustainable and gender-sensitive integration of IDPs in Pemba through the implementation of Durable Urban Solutions" with funding from the Canadian High Commission, over a period of two years. The project's main objective is to strengthen the resilience of displaced and host communities, particularly displaced women and girls, and local authorities dealing with the growing challenges due to the massive population increase in urban areas, with a focus on the City of Pemba.

In this context, a series of community activities were undertaken from 29 November to 02 December 2022 to promote participatory analysis and define strategic recommendations for the formulation phase of the action plan for the Mahate neighbourhood, as well as the provision of elements for the preparation of the Urban Profile of Pemba. The phase culminated with the deliverance of the “Seminar for the presentation and discussion of territorial approaches to support the sustainable integration of displaced families and host communities in Pemba City” on 09 December 2022, at Kauri Hotel, in Pemba.

Furthermore, the seminar and community activities reinforce the campaign of the "16 Days of Activism to end Violence Against Women" supported by the launch of the exhibition on “Women, Integration of Displaced Persons and Sustainable Solutions in Urban Areas”, which will take place on 9, 10 and 11 December in Mahate neighbourhood, with the active participation of members and representatives of communities and partners operating in Pemba and the vicinity of Mahate.

The core content of the seminar comes from the findings of preliminary assessment activities including  on Social Cohesion, Protection and Mental Health in the Mahate neighbourhood, as well as data collection and participatory mapping related to sustainable integration of IDPs in communities in urban areas of the City of Pemba. Other components include gender issues such as the reduction of gender-based violence, which will influence the elaboration of the expected outputs of this project which are: (i) the Priority Action Plan for the sustainable integration of IDPs in the City of Pemba, which considers gender-sensitive aspects, (ii) the Urban Profile of the City of Pemba, (iii) the physical interventions that promote durable solutions for the sustainable integration of IDPs in urban areas, to be implemented in the Mahate Neighbourhood before the end of the project.
