The Migrant Assistance Unit at IOM Maputo is working on assisted voluntary return and reintegration, strengthening the Government and civil society’s response to human trafficking, and provides protection and direct assistance to victims of trafficking as well as stranded and vulnerable migrants, including unaccompanied minors.
In the area of migrant assistance, IOM works closely with the General Prosecutor’s Office of Mozambique, as national counter-trafficking coordinator, with the Ministry of Interior, in particular its Migration Department, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action and its child services, key civil society actors, UNHCR and UNICEF.
IOM is presently working with UNHCR and the Embassies of the United States and other countries to assist refugees to meet mandatory requirements for resettlement in those nations. IOM also organizes logistical support and travel arrangements and facilitates medical examinations.
